Using the carbonyl index (CI) as an indicator of degradation of marine microplastics (MP; 350-5000 um), the relationship between size and CI of MP at the sea surface, in seawater and on the seabed was investigated to elucidate the degradation process of MP. A negative relationship was found between the size and CI of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) MPs at the sea surface. The CI of even finer MPs (hereafter SMP; 30-350 um) was shown to be very large. In contrast, the CI of MP in sedimentary particles in the seabed did not change over time. This suggests that MPs finer at the sea surface settle into the sea and are deposited on the seabed, but there is no degradation over time in the sedimentary particles.
