  • Why Does a Venomous Jellyfish Sting Hurt? Understanding the Nature of Pain from Stings Caused by Marine Dangerous Organisms

Many dangerous marine organisms, such as jellyfish, cause severe pain to humans when they are touched. However, until now, there has been little scientific study to explore the reasons why this pain occurs. Therefore, our research group has researched for pain-producing compounds in species that cause pain to humans. As a result, we have succeeded in isolating several interesting compounds and determining their structures.

  • Pain causative agents from marine animals

    Project Period (FY): 2016/04  -  2019/03  Investigator(s): Nagai Hiroshi

    Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research(C)  Principal Investigator  16K01911

Among the dangerous marine animals, the box jellyfish Habu-kurage is known with its severe stinging. The causative agents of severe pain by Habu-kurage were researched. Nematocyst was isolated from Habu-kurage, at first. Then, isolated nematocysts were extracted and the pure nematocyst contents were obtained. Now we are trying to isolate the pain causative agents from the isolated nematocysts of Habu-kurage. One of the Okinawan cyanobacteria is known as the causative organism of skin irritation. The skin irritation is caused by the toxins such as aplysiatoxins and lyngbyatoxins. We conducted the isolation of the cytotoxic compounds from this cyanobacterium. Finally, some new aplysiatoxin derivatives have been isolated and structurally elucidated. Also biological activity tests were accomplished on these new compounds.
