Study on social impact assessment method for sustainable ocean development
Project Period (FY): 2019/04 - 2023/03 Investigator(s): lou xiaobo
Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research(B) Co-Investigator 19H04336
This study aims to systematize economic and social evaluation methods used for marine socio-environmental impact assessments based on case studies of five marine development cases. Specifically, the study conducted analyses on: 1) coordination with fisheries and distribution rules regarding deep-sea water extraction on Kume Island, Okinawa Prefecture, 2) evaluation of the impact on fishing operations and the ripple effects of offshore wind power generation facilities in Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture, 3) analysis of the characteristics of consensus building for offshore wind power generation demonstration experiments off Fukushima Prefecture, 4) impact assessment of seabed resource exploration in exclusive economic zones, and 5) collection of foundational information on economic valuation of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) and international coordination efforts.

Effects of toxic flatworms on toxification of pufferfish - Who is the true TTX producer?
Project Period (FY): 2019/04 - 2023/03 Investigator(s): ITOI Shiro
Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research(A) Co-Investigator 19H00954
In order to clarify the main route of supplying TTX to TTX-bearing fish, we focused on the transfer of TTX between TTX-bearing organisms, especially TTX-bearing flatworms, which are widespread in the waters around the Japanese archipelago. The results indicated that TTX-bearing flatworms are restricted to the planocerid lineage, which includes the flatworm Planocera multitentaculata, and that the flatworm in particular is involved in the toxification of TTX-bearing fish juveniles and bivalves, suggesting that it is an organism involved in the toxification with TTX of a wide range of marine organisms. In addition, the amount of TTX increased even when P. multitentaculata were reared for a long period of time on nontoxic food, suggesting that TTX is produced in the body of P. multitentaculata.
